Lindsay Davenport - Absent

Lindsay Davenport is one of the best known Ladies players who is still playing top level tennis after over 16 years on the Ladies Tour. She gave birth to a baby boy in 2007, yet maintains her desire to continue her career at the top, despite reaching the ripe old age of 32. She has been the number one ranked player in the world on no fewer than four occasions and has appeared in five Grand Slam Finals, winning three of them. One of her Grand Slam wins came here at the Australian Open in 2000, she was also runner up here in 2005 and a semi finalist in 2001, 1999 and 1998. She has also reached the Quarter Final here four times. She is unlikely to be amongst the ladies top seeds but all in all, with her vast experience, and if fully fit, is capable of upsetting a few. She could well be a surprise contender this year.

Her game is built largely around her groundstrokes, service return, and serve, which are considered to be among the most powerful and cleanly struck in the history of women's tennis. Her devastating return of second service is frequently taken well inside the baseline. Lack of court speed is perhaps her greatest weakness, mainly because of her size. She is six feet, two inches tall and is the tallest woman to have ever won a Grand Slam.
